NSW Premier leads trade and investment mission to India

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell will lead a senior delegation of industry and business leaders to India next week - a key strategy in the NSW Government’s efforts to rebuild the State’s economy.

Departing Sydney on Saturday 12 November, the one week mission includes meetings with leading Indian government officials, business leaders and investors in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Mr O’Farrell said the 30-strong delegation had been built around NSW’s competitive strengths in education, ICT, resources, financial services and infrastructure.

“India is a long term trade and investment target for NSW,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“With one of the fastest growing economies in the world the opportunities for NSW businesses in India are enormous.

“My role as Premier is to promote NSW as a stable destination for investment and to help build relationships for our companies to get a foot in the door of the booming Indian market.

“India has the world’s fastest growing middle class and NSW businesses and institutions are well placed to meet its demands for more products and services, particularly in the areas of education, insurance and health care.

“In education alone India has committed to skilling 500 million people by 2020 – an enormous undertaking which presents a significant opportunity for our world class universities and TAFE.

“India faces significant challenges in infrastructure delivery to its population meaning the technical expertise of NSW firms will be in demand.

“Tourism also has unrealised potential which is why meetings have been scheduled with two Indian airlines – we want an Indian airline to add direct flights between Mumbai and Sydney to make it easier for Indian visitors to get here.

“Our relationship with India has solid foundations through our historical ties in the Commonwealth and our shared love of cricket, but we must work a lot harder to secure the commercial relationships that will deliver economic benefit for NSW.

“In trade, building relationships is critical and the former Labor Government’s incompetence has left NSW well behind the eight ball.

“While NSW Labor was focused on itself, changing leaders three times in four years, the Premiers of Victoria and Queensland were spruiking their States to key trade partners like India.

“This trade and investment mission to India follows the successful visit to China earlier this year and is part of a concerted effort by the NSW Government to lead regular delegations to both countries to maximise the economic benefit to NSW.

“Trade missions to India and China were a key election commitment of the NSW Liberals & Nationals to rebuild the State’s economy and make NSW number one again.”
