First Indian education fair in Sri Lanka is well received

A first-of-its-kind education fair promoting Indian colleges and universities in Sri Lanka has received a “very positive response,” according to a top organizer of the events held this month in the capital, Colombo, and in the northern town of Jaffna.
Anju Banerjee, head of Educational Consultants India Limited, or EdCIL, also said that while the Indian Education Fair 2011 mainly showcased engineering institutions, it also drew students who wanted to know about programs in the fine arts, nursing, business studies and communications.
According to the High Commission of India, which helped to stage the events, this was the first time that a large number of Indian higher education institutions had marketed themselves in Sri Lanka together.
EdCIL, a state-run enterprise that helps recruit foreign students as well as those of Indian origin for programs in India, says 30 institutions of learning took part in the Colombo fair. Of these, 11 also went to Jaffna, a town that was at the center of Sri Lanka’s civil war, which ended two years ago.
S.B. Dissanayake, the minister of higher education in Sri Lanka, said about 12,000 Sri Lankan students were studying at colleges and universities in India. According to a news report, he said just 22,000 of Sri Lanka’s 150,000 eligible students (fewer than 15 percent) could be accommodated by local higher education institutions. — VIR SINGH
