Sheer grit, dedication changed their destiny

KANPUR: Nischay Chaurasia, son of a betel shop owner and resident of Tariya Sujan, a small hamlet in Kushinagar district, made the city proud by securing all-India rank 150 in the IIT-JEE results.

Nischay is also one among those who hail from a background where education does not have much meaning. He himself did not know what IITs were all about till he reached class X.

The bright teenager was also a part of the 'super 35 batch', out of which 24 students have qualified. The super 35 batch was run by Mahesh Singh Chauhan.

It was only after coming to Kanpur and taking admission in BNSD Shiksha Niketan that Nischay came to know about IITs. Nischay owes his success to his parents and his teacher Mahesh Singh Chauhan.

He said he would like to pursue an engineering course from IIT-Kanpur.

Similarly, Manish Vardhan, 404th rank in the JEE-2011 hails from a poor socio-economic background. Manish's father Laxman Prasad works as an operator of saw machine and is the only earning member in the family. With a meagre income at disposal, Laxman found it tough to provide education to his talented son but he did not give up and got Manish admitted to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidalaya.

When Manish reached class XII, he set the goal of cracking JEE and get admission in an IIT.

Manish want to complete his graduation from IIT-Delhi and then pursue an MBA course.

He said that cricket is his favourite game. He also likes watching films. When asked what his biggest wish is, Manish said he wants to construct a hospital for the poor and needy persons.

Manish's mother Nirmala Devi is proud of her son and wants to see him achieve bigger milestones.

The story of Manjeet Singh is also not much different from Nischay and Manish. Manjeet, with 453th rank, is a hardworker.

Son of a labourer, Manjeet hails from Saharanpur district and had to study in a one-room accommodation before moving to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.

His labourer father, who himself is a high school passout, taught Manjeet till class V.

"As I could not study, I want my son to pursue my dream and this has come true today," said Manjeet's father while talking to TOI. When asked which IIT you would like to choose, Manjeet replied that he wants to complete graduation in mechanical engineering stream from IIT-Roorkee.

He also added that he wants to become a civil servant and serve the society.

Interestingly, at this time of celebrations, Manjeet's mother Mainwati is yet not aware what Manjeet has achieved as she is illiterate and hardly knows what an IIT is.
