State government has decided to demand an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the state. The decision of seeking an IIM in the state and setting it up in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region was taken on Wednesday in a meeting chaired by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
“It’s at a very primary stage as the central government would decide on the proposals by various state governments. We lost the Indian School of Business (ISB) to Andhra Pradesh a few years ago, but if the permission is given for an IIM in the state, we would take it up on priority basis,” Chavan told DNA.
It may be recalled that when the ISB demanded land for setting up a world class college in Navi Mumbai, the state government dilly-dallied. Andhra Pradesh offered them land and grabbed the project.
Besides IIM, the state also plans to demand a branch of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) at Amravati in Vidarbha. The government also has decided to set up an International Institution of Information and Technology (IIIT) in the state. The Central government would provide Rs45 crore of the Rs135 crore project.
All the three proposals — demanding IIM, IIIT and AMU —would be moved to the central government by the higher and technical education department shortly, according to higher & technical education minister, Rajesh Tope.
The issue of proposals for starting new colleges also was discussed in the meeting. The department has received 296 proposals to start new junior and degree colleges. The highest proposals, 100, are moved by Marathwada University, followed by Mumbai University with 74 proposals. The decision over the sanction was differed as the chief minister directed the department to thoroughly scrutinise the applications based on the fixed benchmarks.
“Infrastructure, space, manpower, laboratory, connectivity are few of the benchmarks to be followed by the institutions seeking permission to start new college,” Tope said. “Once all the applications are scrutinised thoroughly, the nod will be given in the first week of June. The colleges will start functioning immediately from the current academic year.”
The decision about setting up 8 women hostels also was taken by the state government in the meeting held at the Vidhan Bhavan. Two of the hostels will be in the Mumbai, taking the total intake capacity of the hostels in the state to 2,500. The new hostels are planned in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad and other districts.
The four new pre-IAS training institutions were also okayed, taking the total number to 8. The new centres will be Ratnagiri, Amaravati, Nashik and Nanded.
