64 outstanding students awarded by CHSEM

The root cause of all insurgency problem in the state is illiteracy and lack of quality education", said Manipur education minister DD Thaisii Thursday at the 18th annual prize distribution function of Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (CHSEM) at GM Hall in Imphal. 45 excellent students drawn from different schools across the state were awarded cash and citation by CHSEM while 19 donor sponsored awards carrying cash and citation were also presented at the function today.
Speaking as a chief guest in the function Mr Thaisii observed that the rate of illiteracy in the state is rising even as BA and MA degree holders are also on the rise. "But because of the abject lack of quality education in the state the degree holders are largely unemployed and misled," he said, adding that this has been the singular cause of insurgency related problems in the state.
If we could manage to solve issues related to the education system, rest of the issue related to development and peace would follow suit, he said. Talking about the attrition rate of government schools and institutions, the education minister said that parents have lost faith in the state run educational institutions and prefer to send their wards to institutions outside the state especially for higher studies despite the high risk and cost involved.
All that is set to change in a few years from now according to the education minister. The government of India has formulated a new education policy with the prospect for far reaching dividend and in 2-3 years the education system in Manipur will be completely overhauled, making it worthy of competition against any education system in India, he said.
The Right to Education has been extended till Class VIII in the state and in two years time it is set to cover till Class X, he said while also adding that the education department of the state needs to shoulder tremendous responsibility to make this a reality and in bringing quality education system in the state.
