A cloud of uncertainty prevails over the admission of Orissa JEE qualifiers into various professional courses because of the unclear eligibility criteria. The OJEE authorities postponed the first round of provisional allotment for MBA and MCA students, which was earlier scheduled to be held on Thursday.
"We had to defer it because the matter of eligibility criteria is sub-judice. We are hoping for an early resolution of the issue," said OJEE chairman L N Panda. The authorities will notify the new date after the case is resolved, he said.
It is feared that the authorities may have to postpone seat allotment of other courses such as medical and engineering too if the court decision does not come by the seat allotment date in August.
The HC, in an interim order on March 23, had allowed those securing less than cut-off marks in the qualifying examinations to appear for the entrance, following a petition by Orissa Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) secretary, Binod Dash.
The OJEE had fixed 50 % as the cut-off mark in qualifying examinations for general students and 45 % for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes students for the OJEE as per All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms. OPECA has pleaded that the AICTE had changed the eligibility criteria in a hurry without taking all stakeholders into confidence.
The fate of OJEE qualifiers who got less than 50 % marks in Plus-II and Plus-III will depend on the final decision of the Orissa High Court on the cut off marks for eligibility.
Students, meanwhile, remain a harried lot. "I am participating in the counseling but I don't know if finally I will be eligible to take admission," said a student who qualified the JEE for taking admission in MCA.
The Orissa Professional Education Act 2007 governs technical education in the state.
