Supply surpasses demand in Plus-II

It is not just engineering and degree colleges of the state which have been facing the problem of large scale vacancy of seats and are struggling to attract students for different courses. Hundreds of seats in several Plus-II colleges too remained vacant in Orissa this time, as number of applicants is far less than the number of available seats.
Sources said for the total of 3,05,356 seats in 1,282 junior colleges in the state, 3,53,800 students have applied through online for the 2011-12 academic session. Of the total applicants, about 2,71,298 have submitted common application forms, leading to apprehension of large number of seats lying vacant. The government has made it mandatory for all colleges of the state to conduct e-admission.
"This year's e-admission process is an eye opener for us. From this we could know the demand of seats and available of students in different colleges in the state," said director of higher education department, B P Nanda.
