eminar on NAAC assessment, accreditation

Dimapur Government College (DGC) held a seminar on NAAC assessment and accreditation on Friday at the college seminar hall.

Speaking on the seminar as resource person, joint director and coordinator NAAC Nagaland, Megono Liegise said National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country with a vision to make quality the defining element of higher education in India through a combination of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiatives.

Liegise said that accreditation has many benefits like helping the institution to know its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities through an informed review, identifying internal areas of planning and resource allocation while providing the society with reliable information on the quality of education offered by the institution  and also enhances collegiality on the campus.

She further said the National Accreditation Bill which is under consideration of the Indian Parliament, requires all higher education institutions to get accredited and cautioned that there would be unpleasant consequences for non-accredited colleges. She then advised colleges to be well prepared and apply for accreditation before any such law comes into force.

Also speaking at the seminar as resource person, academic dean and coordinator IQAC, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), Dr. R.K. Behera said out of fifty two colleges (both government and private) only three colleges’ i.e Patkai Christian College, St. Josheph College and Fazl Ali College are the accredited colleges in Nagaland.

Behera said there were seven criteria’s for assessment i.e. curricular aspects, teaching-learning and evaluation, research, consultancy and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, governance and leadership and innovative practices.

Further, he also tipped the college authority on acquiring better grade in NAAC assessment saying that composition of IQAC headed by the head of the institution along with a few senior administrative officers, three to eight teachers, one or two members from the management, one/two nominees from local society with one of the teachers as the coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) should be the primary step of any college applying for NAAC accreditation.

He also said teachers in the department should compulsorily register for M. Phil/Ph. D and every member of the department either independently or jointly publish research articles in any national level/international refereed journals.

Earlier, he also gave some guidelines on how the college authority could apply for NAAC accreditation. The seminar was attended by the faculty and staff of Dimapur Government College.
