Orissa: SGAT Seminar on Integrated Development of Mining Area organized at Barbil

Barbil: A 2-Day Seminar on Approach and Strategy for Integrated Development of Joda-Barbil-Koira Mining Area of Odisha organized by Society of Geo-Scientists and Applied Technologists (SGAT), Bhubaneswar was held at Barbil in newly built Conference Hall of Eastern Zone Mining Association (EZMA) on 23-24 September 2011. While inaugurating the Seminar, Mr. J.K.Tewari, IFS, CCF(Central), MoEF praised the effort of the organizers of the Seminar for choosing a befitting subject at the need of the hour. Besides him, the inaugural session of the seminar was addressed by Dr. R. C. Mohanty, President SGAT and Sri R. L. Mohanty, President, EZMA. Essel Mining & Industries Ltd (EMIL) was a prime sponsor of the said event.

In his address of welcome and introduction, Sri B.K.Mohanty, Adviser, SGAT and Principal Coordinator of the Seminar, mentioned that it is for the first time that such an important technical seminar is organized at Barbil, which though is the country’s most important mining hub has not attracted the attention of the policy makers, bureaucrats, administrators, NGOs and Civil Society as far as development of the predominant tribal inhabited and underdeveloped area of the country is concerned. He listed the areas, which needed special attention such as infrastructure, health care, education and community welfare. He mentioned that the objective of the seminar is to prepare a roadmap for integrated development on the basis of deliberations and views to be expressed by the experts and delegates representing institutions like IBM, Department of Steel & Mines, Govt. of Orissa, MoEF, Govt. of India, South Eastern Railways, EZMA, TATA Steel, Mecon, EMIL, FIMI, Orissa State Pollution Control Board, Keonjhar Citizen Forum, Padmasri Tulasi Munda and others.

The seminar will have 4 technical sessions to be chaired by Dr. NK Choudhury, Former CEO of Arcelor Mittal’s Kazakhstan Operations; Mr. KP Nyati, Senior Advisor, FIMI and CEO, Sustainable Mining Initiative; Dr. SK Sarangi, President, MEAI and Mr. Nilamadhab Mohanty, IAS (Retd.), Former Chairman, OMC & Secretary of Ministry of Industry. As many as 11 technical papers presented in the seminar. 155 delegates attended the seminar representing 42 institutions and representatives from State and Central Government. 

At the end of the Seminar, a road map was proposed for the integrated development of Joda-Barbil-Koira mines area covering the areas of infrastructure, mining and social sector through a joint effort. Mr. R.L. Mohanty, President, EZMA in his concluding remarks strongly stressed on  consolidated effort of the mines owners to contribute meaningfully for the development of the state. Mr. B.K.Mohanty, Advisor, SGAT summarized the proceedings of the seminar and Dr. U.C.Jena, DD (Mines), Joda gave the vote of thanks.
