BHUBANESWAR: This could blow the lid off a big racket on fake marksheets to get admission into the prestigious Regional Institute of Education (RIE). The North Orissa University (NOU) has confirmed that the marksheets of some students, who got into the RIE at Bhubaneswar in 2009 after completing graduation in science from a college affiliated to the varsity in Mayurbhanj district, are bogus.
RIE, after receiving a complaint recently, had sent the marksheets of three B.Ed students, including two girls for verification to NOU. The Times Of India first carried a report on August 31 regarding the allegation of admission into RIE by producing fake marksheets, prompting the college authorities to look into the matter.
The NOU on Monday sent a letter to the RIE confirming tampering of the original marksheets of the three students. "The varsity found huge variations between the original marksheets of the students and the ones produced by them before us during admissions," RIE principal U K Nanda told TOI. He, however, did not divulge details of the fake marksheets.
The three students belong to Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts and did their graduation from the same college under NOU. "I suspect a big racket involved in it. After procuring the original marksheets from their college, the students must have manipulated them outside. It is a serious offence," Nanda said.
The RIE principal said he has informed the NCERT, the apex body governing the RIE branches in different cities of the country. "I have sought permission from the NCERT to lodge complaint against the students at the local police station. Besides, I sought permission to hand over the matter to CBI or the state vigilance to investigate. I am waiting for the NCERT reply," the principal said.
While the RIE withheld the B.Ed certificates of two students, one girl has already left the institute with her certificate. Shaken by the revelation, the RIE has sent the marksheets of some other students, who procured certificates of NOU, for verification. The college is trying to find out exactly how many students took admissions from the NOU affiliated colleges.
Asked whether any RIE insiders helped the three students get into the institute, Nanda said, "A thorough investigation can reveal everything." When asked about the scrutiny process of RIE during admission, Nanda said, "The fake marksheets looked like original ones. It was professionally and meticulously manipulated."
