Teachers' Day a mixed bag in state

BHUBANESWAR: While Teachers' Day was celebrated across India on Monday with teachers having a gala time with lots of gifts and special treats accorded to them by students, hundreds of teachers in the state had to return home disappointed. Not only did teachers of 1,983 block grant schools observe the day as a black day, in many government schools it was a lackluster day, with classes conducted as usual.
"Every year students observe Teachers' Day in the school, for which classes are suspended for the day. The practice is to mark the day as an 'Observance Day'. But today since we did not have any prior approval from higher authorities, classes continued in the state as usual," said Sandhyarani Mishra, a teacher in a government school in Nayapalli area. "During the recess we organised a small meeting where we told students about Teachers' Day or many of them may never know about the existence of such a day," she added.
