Karnataka government has cleared 10 projects in the food processing sector valued at Rs 2,736 crore, FnB News learnt on Friday.
The State High Level Committee for Industrial Projects clearance chaired by state chief minister B S Yeddyurappa accorded in-principle approval for the projects, valued at Rs 2,736 crore, which included eight sugar factories with a total investment of Rs 2,006 crore. These factories will come up at Bijapur, Mysore, Bagalkot and Belgaum. In the FMCG space, Britannia Industries Limited is investing Rs 100 crore and food major Cargill India has planned a Rs 630 crore investment in the food processing sector in the state.
Giving details of the projects that got the committee's approval, minister for industries Murugesh Nirani told reporters after the meeting, that 28 mega industrial projects were approved with an investment of Rs 8,622.41 crore and had the potential to generate 22,799 jobs. Apart from the 10 projects in the food processing segment, other sectors that received nod for projects included automobiles, ceramics, chemicals, education, engineering, infrastructure facilities and IT parks, petrochemicals, steel and textiles.
While Britannia Industries is setting up a greenfield biscuit and bakery project, which is a manufacturing unit in Doddaballapur Industrial Area, with an investment of Rs 100 crore, Cargill India is investing Rs 630 crore to grow its business in India. Currently the company has a presence in grains & oil seeds; refined oil where it owns three vegetable refineries at Paradeep (Orissa), Kandla (Gujarat) and Kurkumbh (Maharastra); and flavour production centre at Bangalore for bakery beverages and dairy.
According to officials at the Karnataka Udyog Mitra, which is the single-window agency for clearing the industrial projects, the state is already home to five food parks at Malur in Kolar district, Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, Navanagar in Bagalkot district and Jewargi in Gulbarga district.
In 2009-10, the state government announced its intentions to establish a spice park at Byadagi in Haveri district. For the initiative, the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has already identified 120 acres of land for the spice park project. These parks come under the supervision of Food Karnataka Limited which was set up by the state government and now the company is engaged in the process of obtaining the Feasibility Reports from consultant to assess the viability of each of these projects.
In an effort to capitalise on the state agro climatic zones that support the growth of fruits, vegetables, grains, millets, and cereals, now the state government is gearing up to organise the Global Agricultural and Horticulture Investors Meet 2011 (dates to be finalised) for which it is targeting Rs 50,000 crore of investment from potential Indian and international food and beverage companies, informed Dr G K Vasanth Kumar, additional secretary, department of agriculture, Government of Karnataka.
