Chief Secretary, Madhav Lal today asked the officials of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication to start journalism course in the IIMC Jammu branch from next year.
“The journalism courses have to be started in the upcoming branch in Jammu next year,” Lal said while chairing a meeting to discuss the modalities for setting up IIMC regional branch in Jammu.
According to an official communiqué, it was stated in the meeting that State Government was keen to facilitate establishment of the regional branch for which five to10 acres of land would be made available at a suitable place in the winter capital. It was also decided that temporary accommodation for faculty and students and premises would be arranged till the construction of the state-of- the- art and fully equipped building is completed, it said adding the purpose was to ensure that journalism courses are launched during next year.
Director General IIMC, Sunit Tandon said in order to meet the growing demand for quality media education the premier Indian Institute of Mass Communication had approved four new regional centres in Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Mizoram and Mahrashtra. The Institute presently has a branch at Dhenknal Orissa, he said.
Tandon stressed the importance of acquiring a big chunk of land, saying that IIMC aims at establishing full fledged media institute with all Journalism courses in the state in tune with the requirements of modern media industry.
The Chief Secretary asked the concerned departments to speed up acquisition of land after identifying it at a convenient place in Jammu district, enabling to take up early execution of the project.
