I project director and senior scientist of Indian Space Research Organization Mylswamy Annadurai is upset with private engineering college managements which use his name and photographs in advertisements to promote their institutions without his consent .
"I visit colleges to meet students and encourage them to excel in science. But some colleges are exploiting my name for publicity," Annadurai told The Times of India. About five private engineering colleges in the state use his photograph and former president Dr Abdul Kalam's video footage in their advertisement which promote image of their institutions during admission season .
The scientist said he had warned the colleges. "All colleges are the same for me; I should not be seen as promoting a few colleges. Despite my warning, some colleges continue to use my pictures for their propaganda," said Annadurai , who is currently leading the Chandrayaan-2 project.
Among the colleges is SCAD College of Engineering and Technology, Tirunelveli. Annaduari had visited a college in Tirunelveli last year and Kalam attended a felicitation five years ago. A 40-second television commercial of the college shows the two scientists . Anna University of Technology vice-chancellor C Thangaraj said it was not ethically correct on the part of the colleges to use the scientist's picture. "We are sending circulars to private colleges to stop such practices," Thangaraj said.
When contacted, the college authorities said there was no commercial motive in using the scientists' videos. "We are using their photographs and video clips to prove that we are associated with scientists . We are ready to remove the part in the advertisement ," SCAD college principal N Mohamed Sheriff said.
Education experts felt authorities must keep a tab on college advertisements. "The All India Council for Technical Education should clear these advertisements," education expert Christudas Gandhi said.
