Experts appreciate Tata Steel's rehabilitation policy in Kalinganagar project of Orissa

Academicians, researchers and experts acknowledged the quality of work being done in rehabilitation at Tata Steel's Kalinganagar project. Key dignitaries and experts like Mr. Nila Madhab Mohanty (retd.  IAS), Sarat Das, Ravi Pani and others said this at an evening seminar on Kalinganagar: Past and Present organized by Odisha Forum in New Delhi on Saturday, 11th June 2011. 

Guest of Honour, Revenue, Disaster Management and Information & Public Relations Minister Mr. Surjya Narayan Patro provided a brief background of the mining industry and on stressed on the important role of the steel industry in the economic development of the state.  He however, strongly emphasized that there is always a requirement to strike a fine balance between the environment, industrial development and people’s livelihood. Citing example of Tata’s exemplary work he said such a balance has been successfully attempted in Kalinganagar. Mr Patro asserted that this is an important phase in the history of the mining industry in Odisha in particular and India in general. He assured that the Kalinganagar project work is going on smoothly and the state government provides all support to the company for earlier commencement of production.

Mr Hridayeshwar Jha, the Vice President of Tata Steels, Odisha spoke about progress of the Kalinganagar project and hoped that the steel plant would start by the end of 2013. Mr. Rajesh Chintak, Chief Resident Executive of Tata Steels Odisha made a presentation on the CSR activities and apprised the audience of the progress made at Kalinga Nagar. During the presentation the Tata team mentioned the incident of police firing in 2006 as 'unfortunate' and ‘tragic’ and the team accepted that they have learnt a lot in last five years.

Mr. Sarat Das, the President of Orissa Forum in his address appreciated Tata Steel’s application of an innovative model of 4R Policy (Reassuring Communication, Resettling the Displace Population, Rehabilitation and Rechecking Implantation) in Kalinganagar. This approach has extended beyond the normal CSR activities and has included investments in the fields of education, healthcare and art & culture. This model has achieved a show case rehabilitation and helped build trust in the tribal community of the area. Out of 1195 affected families 909 families have been successfully resettled. Mr. Ravi Pani and Mr. S.K. Agarwal from the Orissa Forum spoke on how Tata Steel has been doing an impressive job at Kalinganagar.
