PM Announces Sports Scholarship In New Delhi

What is this sports scholarships and research programme? The sports scholarships and research programme forms a part of the India-NZ Prime Ministers' Education Cooperation Initiative.
The programme will involve the exchange of sports academics, coaches, trainers and in addition to young cricketers and other sports persons.
Scholarships will be made available to Indian students of sport to study in New Zealand Universities.
What do they hope to achieve? New Zealand and India have a long-standing sporting relationship with a shared love for cricket and hockey among other sports.
These sports scholarships hope to take this relationship further to support more collaboration between the two countries in sport and exercise sciences, including management, training and coaching.
Deepening the education relationship through sports will benefit young people from both countries who will gain from each other's expertise and skills. New Zealand and India also have high performance centres which advance our respective sporting ambitions.
New Zealand universities aim to develop research cooperation with India in sports and related fields. Current cooperation in these areas is very limited.
What education providers in NZ are involved? The proposal has been discussed with the Chair of Universities New Zealand, and three New Zealand universities offering the greatest range of qualifications in sports (AUT, Lincoln, Otago). All are supportive of the proposal.
It is likely New Zealand cricketing and other sports bodies, as well as our high performance sporting organisations will be involved. High performance centres and sports bodies have existing active partnerships with New Zealand universities.
How many scholarships will be awarded? We are currently working with the Indian Government on the scholarship and research programme, details of which are expected later in the year.
Who will be able to apply to participate in the scheme? In the first instance, the sports scholarships will be open to nationals of India to study in New Zealand universities. Research and academic cooperation will open to academics from Indian and New Zealand universities, including those working high performance centres.
Details of the scholarships and criteria will be announced after further discussion between the two countries.
How much funding is being provided for the scheme? This scholarship will form part of, and be funded through, the wider Education Initiative that will be announced by Prime Ministers Key and Singh tomorrow
