Once again IIT Kharagpur has hit the top slot amongst the engineering colleges in India (including govt. and pvt.) according to the Indian Educational Institutional Ranking czar Outlook. The Institute has topped the list with an overall score of 887.2 out 1000. The criteria for ranking were - academic excellence, infrastructure, placement, selection, and personality development and individual interface.
Among the individual criteria, IIT KGP has topped the placement chart. This remains a fact that despite the JEE toppers not taking admission in this IIT, the Institute manages to provide the best placement opportunities across all engineering colleges in the country. The story of the offer from Facebook (around USD 100,000) to a student of the Computer Science Engineering department of IIT KGP is everywhere, being the highest among all IITs. In 2010-2011, 124 companies from India and abroad have made 779 offers. The average salary is expected to be 20-25% more than that of last year's. Some of the major recruiters are - Barclays Capital, Schlumberger Asia Services, P&G - R&D division, Rio Tinto and Finisar Malaysia, The Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Co, Opera Solutions, Goldman Sachs, Capital One, Credit Suisse, Google, Microsoft, Nomura, ITC, Delloitte, Oracle, Tata Group, Reliance, IBM India, Evalueserve, BHEL, Cognizant, Deutsche Bank Global Markets Centre, Geometric Ltd., HSBC Technology and Services, Infosys, NTPC, Z S Associates and others.
The Institute is at 2nd position in Infrastructure and facilities next to BITS Pilani (private). The Institute over the past 60 years has made considerable developments in this segment from the modest start in 1951. IIT KGP has been engaged in a steady process of development with 19 academic departments, 16 centres of excellence and 25+ Special R&D units. The vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants. Currently we have about 600 faculty, 2200 employees and 9000 students on the campus. The civil works has several projects - work in progress, e.g. new student hostels and extension of existing ones, new academic complex, laboratory complex, accommodation facilities for faculty and staff, activity centre and also renovation of old heritage complex, improvement in water supply, road widening et al.
With the Diamond Jubilee celebrations starting in August this year, the IIT KGP has geared up for holistic growth plans through scalable and sustainable resource development program. The aim is to position the Institute across the globe as a top ranking technology school, R&D centre and hub of innovation. The Institute has already ranked (22) among the top 25 engineering and technology colleges in Asia as per QS Rankings. Also the non-core branches like Dept. of Biotechnology ranked among the top 10 and Vinod Gupta School of Management among the top 20 list in the country.
