Bangalore, the education hub

Today, Bangalore's claim to fame comes from its IT behemoths and the lakhs of jobs they have generated. It's said that if you throw a stone in Bangalore, chances are that it will hit an IT professional. Bangalore's fame, in fact, has spread far and wide for its IT prowess, and thus has putIndia on the global map.

However, Bangalore's fame as an IT hub has been a recent phenomenon. The truth is that it has been known as an education hub in the south for decades before the IT boom.

True to type, Bangalore has a range of courses to offer: from aerospace engineering to agriculture, from biotechnology to business management, from law to sociology, from economics to nanotechnology, the range is truly impressive.

Which is the reason why you see students from all over India making it their education destination. Whether it's from Kerala or Kashmir, or Kolkata to Punjab, you will hear many languages spoken across the city.

The city has been home to the best of research and other institutes:

* The famed Indian Institute of Science was set up on the land donated by the Mysore Maharajas, who were visionaries in many fields. Even to this day, the best of scientific minds are attracted to IISc.
* The Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) too is another centre known for excellent standards in research.
* Then there is the National Law School of India University, a trend-setter in the legal education field. Today, it is like a blueprint for several similar law schools of high quality.
* In the field of management, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, has set high standards in management education and is one of the top three management institutes in India.
* Likewise, there are the reputed International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, (IIITB); the National Centre for Biological Sciences, and the wellknown Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC), a research institute in social sciences; the Raman Research Institute; the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR); the TIFR Center for Applicable Mathematics; the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS); Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST); the CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (CMMACS); the Indian Institute of Astrophysics; Centre for Liquid Crystal Research.

National Institute of Design and National Institute of Fashion Technology are also located in Bangalore.

At the graduation level, colleges offer a spectrum of courses from A to Z — biotech to genetics, electronics, fashion, computer applications, hotel management, law, nursing, media and family business. At the post-graduation level, colleges offer Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Commerce, Geography, History, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, to MCA, Social Work, Communications and the like.

Engineering itself offers more than 25 options. Historically speaking, it was the Mysore Maharajas who gave the impetus to education in the 1880s and to engineering education in the state. Later, the private sector, too, opened many institutes, thus showing the way to many other states which followed suit. Also, religious heads opened institutes of learning, opening a multitude of courses and options for youngsters from all over India.
