Gatka graces national school games calendar

The (SGFI) has incorporated Indian martial art  as a discipline in the national school games 2011-12. Besides, the Punjabi University, Patiala, has accepted the proposal of Gatka Federation of India (GFI) to host All-India Inter-Varsity Gatka Championship during the first week of September. 

GFI president  said that the federation is dedicated to standardize and popularize the traditional martial art of Gatka as a sport in Punjab as well as in India. He said that the GFI in collaboration with the Punjab Gatka Association (PGA), for the first time, has come out with a comprehensive book on Gatka rules and regulations.

"We will also provide training to budding 'Gatkebaaz' through workshops and camps." Bhullar said Punjab Olympic Association (POA) has already recognised the PGA. The Department of Education Punjab has also included Gatka in Punjab schools, colleges and universities' sports calendars on the repeated appeals of the PGA. 

He added that representations have been sent by the GFI to Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to incorporate Gatka in the AIU sports calendar from this academic year. 

He said that the  had constituted a Sikh Martial Art Research and Training Board (SMART Board) to grant scholarships to aspiring research scholars doing PhD in the field of martial art, especially on Gatka. 
Bhullar said that to provide access to Gatka in the national as well as international arena and promote the game among youths, the GFI and PGA has chalked out various programmes. He said that GFI would organize national Gatka training-cum-seminar at next month to train Gatka coaches, referees and judges.
