IMC 2011: ISB Dean, SOIL Founder on new B-school models

India needs change. Indian management education needs change. This is the time to develop our own indigenous business education models. In this context, the Indian Management Conclave 2011 will hold a session on the topic “How Young B-Schools are Questioning the Status Quo and Creating New Models”. The Conclave will be held on August 11-12 in New Delhi under the theme ‘Building a great B-school: What’s the new DNA!’.

Eminent thought leaders will share their learnings on bringing change in management education. The speakers who will address the session will be Ms. Savita Mahajan, Deputy Dean, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad & CEO, ISB Mohali Campus and Mr. Anil Sachdev, Founder & CEO, SOIL, Gurgaon.

In India, only a handful of B-schools are thinking different, and what is noteworthy is that these are young B-schools. These young and growing B-schools have forged strong relationships with the industry and have integrated their learnings into the curriculum for the MBA students.

Industry integration is one of the core strengths of these B-schools, the leading examples of such B-schools are Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad and the Gurgaon based School of Inspired Leadership (SOIL).

Take for example: SOIL’s industry consortium consists of more than 30 corporate members, which includes Aditya Birla Group, Infosys, Tata Steel. At the upcoming Mohali campus of ISB, there will be four schools that are being developed with support of Analjit Singh, Atul Punj, Pawan and Sunil Munjal, and Rakesh Bharti Mittal.

Another key innovation that has been adopted by these emerging B-schools is the shorter duration of their courses, compared to full time two year courses. The short duration programmes are fulfilling the immediate needs of the industry for quality MBAs.

The Indian Management Conclave 2011 will provide a platform to such B-schools, and the brain behind them, to share their experiences on adopting innovative business education models.

Ms. Savita Mahajan has been associated with the ISB since its inception in 2001. After obtaining an undergraduate degree in Economics from Delhi University, Savita did her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, in 1981. Since then, she has worked in several Indian organisations. She has carried out consulting and training assignments for corporations and several development organisations.

Mr. Anil Sachdev completed his MBA from the University of Pune in 1975 and joined Tata Motors and then the Eicher Group in 1978 and worked in HR, Operations and TQM areas.

On creating Eicher Consulting Services, Anil brought AT Kearney to India and also formed a joint venture with Strategic Decisions Group. After spending 10 years building ECS, Anil decided to start a new organization with a focus on human development. Grow Talent enabled several global and local organizations to achieve breakthrough performance by realising the potential of their people and creating a talent advantage.

In an interview given to MBAUniverse.com earlier, Mr. Anil Sachdev had said, “In the past, Indian business schools used to emphasize on teaching subjects in ‘silos’ without giving students the holistic view of management education. But, fortunately the trend seems to be changing as new business schools are coming up with holistic approach to teach management lessons to students.”

The Indian Management Conclave 2011 will witness speeches by more than 30 eminent speakers, representing B-schools, accreditation bodies, education policy makers.

Some of the other eminent speakers who will address the Indian Management Conclave include: Dr. Pritam Singh, Director General, IMI, New Delhi; Dr. M Rammohan Rao, Professor and Dean Emeritus, ISB Hyderabad; Dr. N Ravichandran, Director, IIM Indore; Prof. MJ Xavier, Director, IIM Ranchi; Prof. P Rameshan, Director, IIM Rohtak; Dr. Bala Balachandran, Founder & Dean, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai; Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, NMIMS Mumbai; Mr. Rajiv Narang, Founder, CEO, Erehwon Consulting; Dr. Ganesh Natarajan, VC and CEO – Zensar Technologies; Professor Michael Luger, Dean, Manchester Business School, UK; Dr. Eileen Peacock, Senior VP and Chief Officer, Asia, AACSB International; Prof. LU Wei, Associate Dean, Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China; Dr. H Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, Greater Noida; Dr. Bibek Banerjee, Director & Academic Mentor, IMT Ghaziabad; and Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director, Symbiosis Society, Pune.
