SHELLER COLLAPSE: BODY RETRIEVED FROM DEBRIS: Rescuers on Friday retrieved the body of Sanjiv, one of the two workers who was trapped under the debris of heavy machinery after the drying unit of a rice sheller Sun Star Overseas collapsed on the night of June 1 reportedly due to lightning. Efforts to locate the other worker under the debris continued. Sumit Agarwal, owner of the mill, claimed that the full medical aid was being provided to the injured and the family of the deceased would be suitably compensated. KHALSA COLLEGE ISSUE: STUDENTS BACK TEACHERS: Representatives of the Independent Students Federation (ISF), National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Punjab Students Union (PSU) have expressed their solidarity with the agitating Khalsa College teachers and announced a motorcycle rally that will start from Gurdwara Shaheedan on June 7. Keshav Kohli, state president of the ISF, said if the college was made a university, education would become out of reach of the poor and the underprivileged. BLUESTAR MEMORIAL: A decision on Operation Bluestar Memorial may be announced before June 6. A resolution on raising such a memorial was passed by the SGPC nine years back. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said they had directed the SGPC to take "a concrete decision" on or before June 6. UNIDENTIFIED PAK NATIONAL SHOT DEAD: An unidentified Pakistan national was shot dead when was trying to sneak into Indian territory on Thursday night. According to the information available, Border Security Force jawans observed some movement near pillar number 98 at Udhar Dhariwal village. They challenged the intruder. Seeing the jawans of 65-battalion, the Pak national tried to flee. The BSF jawans opened fire and killed the Pakistani national on the spot. BATHINDA FARMERS’ PROTEST CONCLUDES: The three-day dharna by labourer and farmer organisations ended outside the Mini-secretariat here today. The leaders of the protesters submitted a memorandum enlisting their demands to Bathinda Tehsildar Avtar Singh Makkar at the dharna site. He assured them of forwarding the same to the state government.

MOHALI VISIT: A team from Walsall College, the UK, visited the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) here. The team visited the institute under a UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) project. including eight women, got injured when a Tata jeep overturned on the Jhajjar-Sampla road near Girawar village on Friday. The police has registered a case against the jeep’s driver.The jeep with 20 persons on board was on its way to Naurangpur village from Juan village in Sonepat district . KURUKSHETRA NIT DIRECTOR: Prof Anand Mohan of the BHU Institute of Technology, Banaras, joined as Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, on Friday. Prof Mohan was accorded a warm welcome by NIT senior faculty, officers and the Karamchari Sangh. NARNAUL GOLD IN ARCHERY: Archer Anil Kumar of Narnaul won the gold medal in the 3rd Asian Archery Championship held in Dhaka (Bangladesh). Anil Kumar is now preparing for the next championship to be held in Kolkata. ROHTAK NEW COURSE: The Department of Public Administration at Maharshi Dayanand University here has announced a new five-year course for the Master’s degree (honours) in the subject from this academic session. The course will have a total of 60 seats. The course will comprise 10 semesters and be divided in two modules. SONEPAT SHO SUSPENDED: Chander Veer, SHO, Gohana sadar police station, has been placed under suspension by SSP KK Rao for negligence in a murder case. Gohana DSP Tula Ram said Devender of Murlana village was beaten up some youths of the same village on June 1. Devender later succumbed to his injuries at the PGIMS, Rohtak. The SHO sent an ASI to the village whereas the SHO himself should have reached the spot, the DSP said. JAMMU SUMMER VACATION FROM JUNE 6: The state government on Thursday announced summer vacation in all government educational institutions, besides recognised private schools, up to the higher secondary level falling in the summer zone of the Jammu division from June 6 to July 31. The school timing of the educational institutions in the winter zone in the Jammu division shall be 9 am to 3 pm from June 6. DEHRADUN DOCTOR COMMITS SUICIDE: A 42-year-old doctor, who was working at the CMI Hospital, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night at her residence in Adrash Colony, Subhash Nagar. The police suspects that she had injected something to kill herself. It has recovered a suicide note from the spot which said she was herself taking this step and no one should be held responsible for her death. She has been identified as Manisha, RMO at the CMI, said the police. According to cops, she was under depression as her husband had passed away some time ago. Her body was later sent to a mortuary at Doon Hospital. UKD PROGRAMME: The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) will be honouring statehood agitators at Rishikesh and Mussoorie on June 15 and June 24 respectively. Issuing a statement on Friday, UKD leader NK Gusain said the UKD as part of its campaign to honour statehood agitators had decided to honour the agitators from the Garhwal region from June 15 to June 25 while those from Kumaon had already been honoured. He said the felicitation at Rishikesh and Mussoorie was part of the Garhwal campaign. DHARNA: Uttarakhand Rajya Nirman Senani Sangh’s dharna at Dehradun District Headquarters entered third day on Friday. The protestors alleged that the statehood agitators were not getting a fair treatment. Addressing the gathering, Mathura Pant said a special camp must be organised to identify the statehood agitators, who have been left out despite being active participants in the agitation. KUMAON BRIEFSFIVE HELD WITH ANCIENT IDOL: Personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Almora police claim to have nabbed five persons and have recovered an ancient idol of Lord Mahavira from their possession. It is learnt that the accused were in the process of negotiating a price for the idol in the Karbala area when they were nabbed. The idol is said to be more than 100 years old. Those nabbed have ben identified as Mayank Karki, Raghvendra Singh, Dheerendra Singh Gangola, Ashish Sah and Harish Mehta. PROTESTS OVER IRREGULAR SUPPLY OF LPG: The towns of Haldwani and Kitcha continue to witness public agitation over the failure of the authorities to streamline the supply of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Alleging sale of LPG on the black market and its irregular supply, the residents of the Teenpani area of Haldwani resorted to a two-hour traffic jam on the Haldwani-Bareilly road, causing a lot of problems to commuters. The vehicles had to be diverted to other routes. In Kitcha, the agitated people gheraoed a gas agency. Meanwhile, the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) has decided to open three more gas agencies at Sigri in Nainital district along with Kanda and Garur in Bageshwar district. DELEGATIONS MEET ALVA: Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva met representatives of various organisations at the Raj Bhawan on Thursday. They brought to her notice various problems and issues pertaining to them. The first delegation that met her was from the Uttarakhand Swachakar Karamchari Sangha. Its members requested her intervention in issues pertaining to the allocation of rickshaws and boat licences along with the distribution of land to the landless people from the Valmiki community. The other delegations were from the Uttarakhand Devbhoomi Udyog Vyapar Mandal and the Uttarakhand Congress Committee. 2 KILLED IN ACCIDENT: Two youngsters were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a private bus near Sunderkhal village, near Ramnagar, on Thursday. Those killed have been identified as 29-year-old Vinod Rawat and 30-year-old Girish Rawat from Bhakrakot village in the Salt area of Almora. Their motorcycle collided head on with the bus. While Vinod is learnt to have been killed on the spot, Girish died while being treated at a government hospital. The police got the post-mortem of the deceased done and handed their bodies to their relatives. The bus driver is yet to be arrested. MAN KILLED OVER FAMILY DISPUTE: In a gruesome incident that has come to light in the Maldhanchaur area, near Ramnagar, two persons allegedly killed the elder brother of their sister’s husband following a clash over a family dispute. Those alleged killers have been identified as Durga and Tulsi. They have been accused of killing Sher Singh. The cause of the dispute is said to be the refusal of the sister of the accused Mohanwati to go to her husband’s village in Moradabad district. The police investigations are on in the matter.
