The roadmap to success

Being one of the largest knowledge economies of the world, it is high time to create a holistic learning environment with focus on innovation and expansion. To achieve this, academicians of the country is focusing on five-point agenda, where innovation is also the key to achieve better teaching learning and skill development.

Marriage of industry and the academia

Even though the academia and industry share a symbiotic relationship, today, a greater partnership between the two is essential for development of education system in India. Academicians emphasise on more industry oriented courses to be made a part of academic curriculum.

"Today industry oriented courses are making their way into the academic curriculum, and institutes like JaganNath Institute of Management Sciences have been emphasising on faculty development with industry experts, industry oriented academic curricula and organising outreach activities," share Manish Gupta and Amit Gupta, Directors,JIMS.

Academicians also point at the role of government here by way of investing more on academic infrastructure and offering incentive for excellence in research.

Bridging the gap with vocational training

Considering importance of skill development among masses for progress of the country, the National Knowledge Commission has recently reiterated the need for vocational education and pointed out that it should be a part of higher education. But, infrastructure for vocational trainings in India is inadequate.

A digital overdrive

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have been one of the greatest enablers that have spearheaded a lot of changes in diverse domains of the society. With ICT intervention, it has been possible today to reach out to a large number of students across the country with integrating multimedia, communication technologies and the Internet. But the challenge here is to bridge the digital divide in the country at access, application and development level. This digital divide has been affecting integration of technology with secondary and higher education.

Cross border knowledge sharing

One initiative that can go a long way in empowering higher education is cross border knowledge sharing. Academicians are of the opinion that the idea of entry and functioning of foreign education providers in India is not about establishing a campus, but development of academia at a multicultural and multi-lateral level.

A research eco-system

If research and its infrastructure in India are long neglected, academicians point at the existing social structure where it is expected from a youngster to be a job holder as quickly as possible. This has been a major handicap in inviting talented youngsters to take up PhD and research works. To overcome this setback, experts suggest researches need to be professionalised at an early stage.
