Small town students score over urban counterparts

d students from small towns score over their urban counterparts, in terms of performance as well as participation. The IJSO is an annual individual and team competition in natural sciences which tests students (14-15 years of age) for their understanding of basic scientific concepts.
While it is the eighth year of IJSO, India will be participating for the fifth time. HBCSE is the nodal centre for training and selecting students for Junior Science Olympiad.
The general trend is that students from smaller towns give a better performance than city students. A similar trend can be seen elsewhere too. For instance, even the training schools of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have a larger fraction of candidates from the smaller towns. The reason is ‘problem of plenty’ in cities. There are too many opportunities and distractions in cities, so students are less focused,” said Prof. Mayank Vahia, national coordinator, Junior Science Olympiad. In the past few years, only one student each from Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi and two from Chennai have made it to the final team. Students coming from the interiors take their education more seriously as they consider good education as the path to make it big. “They know education is their passport to a better life. They also feel that the kind of exposure they will get through a platform like the IJSO will be extremely beneficial for their overall development,” said Vahia.
