India today celebrated its 65th Independence Day withthe Tamil Nadu government deciding to distribute 60,000 milch cows and other essential items as freebies for the poor and the Maharashtra government reaffirming its commitment to modernising the security apparatus in wake of the July 13 serial blasts.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underlined that peace and tranquillity were imperative for development and resolution of political issues, saying that his government would continue efforts as a facilitator to help consistent internal and external dialogue processes which were moving forward positively.
He also hoped that the interlocutors, appointed by the Centre on Kashmir, would submit their report to the Union Government soon.
However, the celebrations in few districts were marred by a general strike called by the Hurriyat Conference, other separatists and militant organisations. Mobile phone services were also temporarily suspended for four hours due to security reasons. The service resumed at 1230 hrs.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy remembered the martyrs, who laid down their lives for the cause of the country and paid homage to them at the Army Parade Ground in Hyderabad.
In Puducherry, several police personnel were awarded the Chief Minister's Police Medal for best service, Chief Minister's Police Medal for very good service and the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Meritorious Police Service. Chief Minister N Rangasamy presented the awards to them.
In Jharkhand, Governor M O H Farook said in a democracy, there is no place for violence and to ensure that the state prospers it is important that the Maoists join the mainstream.
Chief Minister Arjun Munda made key promises of providing 100 per cent literacy, uninterrupted power supply and a corruption-free government in the state.
In Assam, suspected Naxalites triggered a blast on railway tracks as the state celebrated the day under a massive security cover in view of a boycott call given by militant outfits in the North Eastern region. No damage to the track was reported, official sources said.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi expressed satisfaction at the ceasefire declared by several militant outfits in the state, including the pro-talks ULFA and the NFB faction that had so far stayed out of the peace process.
West Bengal celebrated the day with Governor M K Narayanan paying floral tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee celebrated the regime change in the state brought about under the leadership of Trinamool Congress-Congress combine and said it marked "freedom from the autocratic and oppressive Left rule".
In Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi used the occasion to strongly criticise the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for "conspiring against the BJP government" in the state.
After unfurling the national flag, he highlighted his government's achievements saying that the state has the rare distinction of registering record growth in both agriculture and industrial sector. The growth in agriculture sector was above 10 per cent, he said.
On the day, the Kerala government decided to implement "Thooval Sparsam", a programme aimed at providing social security and freedom to women and children from all kinds of harassment.
In Bihar, the Nitish Kumar government announced that the Right to Public Service Act has come into force to enable people to get selected services from government offices within a stipulated time and help check corruption.
Hoisting the Tricolour in Nagaland, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio appealed to the people to lay a solid foundation for a progressive society that rises above tribalism and petty parochialism, a society that prides in the Naga unity and oneness, a society that discourages division on tribal lines.
Two weeks after being sworn in, Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda pledged to launch new programmes for the welfare of the youth by giving priority to job-oriented training schemes and by holding job fairs in the state.

The Raman Singh government resolved to form nine new districts -- Sukma, Kondagaon, Gariaband, Baloda Bazar, Mungeli, Balod, Bemetara, Surajpur and Balrampur -- in Chhattisgarh in order to bring theadministration closer to the people. These districts will start functioning from January 1, next year.
