In India 34 children die out of 1000 newly born children. The Neo-Natal mortality rate is highest in Maharashtra which is 47 whereas the same is 45,43 and 41 in Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Rajasthan respectively. Giving this information in Rajya Sabha today the Minister of Women and Child Development Smt. Krishna Tirath further stated that Integrated Child Development Scheme is implemented to minimize child deaths as one of its objectives. The Minister stated that recently a Conference of State Ministers on ICDS was held in national capital on 20th, 21st and 22nd July 2011 to discuss various issues related to child development.
She said that amongst the problems highlighted by the States/UTs, population norms for opening of AWCs, provision of funds for ECE(Early Childhood Education), protocol for treatment of severely malnourished children, uniformity in recruitment process, minimum qualification for appointments and fixation of retirement age, issues of mobility, flexibility in staff and revision of norms, construction and modernization of Anganwadi Centres through central funds, and provision of additional workers etc. were the important ones.
