Ahmedabad dominates AIEEE rankings in Gujarat

The encouraging results of the 10th All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) have brought a cheer to thousands of students who appeared for the exams from the state.
More than 65,000 candidates appeared from the state for AIEEE, which is the gateway for admission to professional degree courses like engineering, pharmacy and architecture offered through various universities across India.
The exam is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
"The results this year are quite positive and certainly better than last year. Some 40,000 candidates had appeared for examinations last year from Gujarat, while this year the figure was 65,000. Also, from Ahmedabad city this year, some 15,000 students had appeared for the examination," says Pankaj Dhanuka, who has been coaching students for AIEEE for several years.
The figures clearly indicate how the attitude and perception of Gujaratis is changing and more students prefer to take up science stream rather than commerce.
While Ahmedabad has most students in the list of state's top 100 rankers, Gujarat has around 10 students in the top 500 rankers in India, informed Dhanuka. His coaching institute, Parth Ashram has had as many as 24 students, who have figured in the top 100 list of the state.
The improved performance is the results of extra preparations by the students, believes Dhanuka. "Earlier, our students used to prepare for AIEEE only after class XII but now the scenario has changed. They now begin preparations for AIEEE soon after class X," said Dhanuka.
The results also indicate that the paper leak issue has had little impact on students' minds. It must be recalled that on May 5, the AIEEE question paper was leaked, following which the exam was delayed by three hours.
The incident had led to chaos and anxiety among parents, who feared that students may be bogged down by the leak. Later, the exam got rescheduled for May 11.
