India's Experiment in Schooling Tests Rich and Poor

India's caste system is still alive and flourishing. Even though The Right to Education Act was passed 2009, there seems to be a great deal of resentment by the rich towards the poor. Reading this article reminded me of segregation in the United States and apartheid in South Africa. While segregation was strictly based on racial differences, the caste system is based on social economic status. On the other hand, the experiment that they are conducting in India is a great sign of progress and democracy.

However, the manner in which students are selected for private schooling is idiotic, not every child that wins the lottery will be able to succeed. This type of selections makes this experiment unstable, majority of poor kids are looked down on and accused of slowing the learning progress of the rich kids. Not every child will be like Vipin, a poor student that is at the top of his class, but Vipin is not an exception. I also believe that this lottery selection deprives many like Vipin of education, and instead gives it to a child that might not be as bright. It might sound a bit cruel form my perspective but is true.
