State mulls engg seats sans JEE

If you have scored more than 50% (aggregate) with physics, chemistry and mathematics in the higher secondary examination and not found your name on the  merit list, then do not lose heart. For, you may get a seat in one of the private engineering colleges of the state.

On Wednesday, director of technical education, Sajal Dasgupta, said his department was mulling the possibility of providing an opportunity to students who have scored more than 50% in HS with science subjects but failed to get a JEE rank to study engineering.

"There are students who score high in WBJEE but fare badly in HS. Similarly, there are those who score good marks in HS, and yet don't get a rank in WBJEE. We shall now consider their cases," said higher education minister, Bratya Basu.

To include HS graduates in engineering colleges will not require the state to amend any Act for the moment. "Next year, some changes may be brought in," said a higher education department official.

The WBJEE board has already announced a merit list with 90,000 names. After the first counselling session, if seats remain vacant, then preference will be given to All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) students. The third preference will be given to those who have completed BSc, scored 50% in HS and taken West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination for Lateral Entry (JELET).

Preference will also be given to students who have completed their course in polytechnique, passed HS with 50% (aggregate) in science subjects and cleared JELET.

"Even then if seats remain vacant, then private engineering colleges will be asked to advertise on their websites, asking HS graduates with 50% in aggregate in science stream to come forward. A merit list of such students will be prepared. Accordingly, they will get admission," said a senior technical education official. A source said that such a step will not compromise the quality of intake. " has set the yardstick of 50% in aggregate with physics, chemistry and mathematics for students to get a chance to study engineering. Here, we are talking about a rare possibility only when all options are exhausted," said an official.
