NIE fest: Students plant saplings

CHENNAI: Students of St Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School planted saplings in their school compound as part of the Times NIE(Newspaper In Education) Go Green festival on Friday. The event was organized by The Times of India Group in association with the Standard Chartered bank.

Students of the Times NIE member school teemed to take part in oratory and poster design competitions around the theme 'Go Green'. Saplings were also distributed to the participants. The chief guest for the event, Sreeram Iyer, the chief operating officer, India and South Asia for the Standard Chartered Bank, said the students should take small steps towards greater success. "You should keep reading more and create awareness about the need to go green," said Sreeram.

Actor Vivekh said, "There is a need to spread more awareness about environmental issues. Students should respect trees just as they respect their mothers". The actor had started the Green Kalam project, taking a cue from the teachings of former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Through the project, he plans to plant at least 10 lakh saplings all over Tamil Nadu.

Franklyn James, vice-president-RMD, The Times of India Group, Rajesh Chandramouli, business editor of The Times of India, P R Ramesh, deputy general manager,RMD, The Times of India Group were also present on the occasion.
