Nilkesh Patra, a first year student at IIM Shillong, has been awarded the prestigious Aditya Birla Scholarship. The awards were announced at the ITC Grand Central, Mumbai, at a ceremony attended by top dignitaries from industry and science.
The Aditya Birla Scholarships are awarded to the top 24 students across the premier educational institutes like the IITs, IIMs and BITS Pilani. Among the IIMs, only the top 20 students from IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow and IIM Shillong are eligible to apply.
Candidates were shortlisted for the final round which featured an exhaustive personal interview for each candidate. The 12 management students selected included four from IIM Ahmedabad; four from IIM Bangalore; two from IIM Lucknow and one each from the IIMs in Calcutta and Shillong. The distinguished panel of judges consisted of Dr Sanjaya Baru, Editor, Business Standard Limited and former Media Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Senthil Chengalvarayan, Group Editor, CNBC – TV18 (Network 18) and Mr Rajat Gupta, Director, McKinsey & Co.
Nilkesh Patra also holds the Institute’s Gold Medal for being the University topper at NIT Rourkela. He has 4 years of work experience in multimedia development. He is interested in finance and has completed his CFA Level 1. He wants to contribute to his home state, Orissa, in infrastructure development and would like to reform the education system in India. Upon receiving the award, he said “It was a lifetime opportunity to meet such eminent personalities and be interviewed by them. I am really proud to be the first candidate from IIM Shillong to receive this coveted award.”
