34 engg colleges allowed to add 2,190 more seats

Students applying for engineering and pharmacy courses this year have two reasons to cheer about. First, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has permitted 34 existing engineering colleges across the state to increase 2,190 seats in addition to the 35,000 seats. Second, a new engineering college in Dharmaj has been granted permission.

Also, in the next few days, the AICTE will reduce the minimum percentage to apply for engineering and pharmacy courses from 50% to 45%. For the reserved category, the minimum requirement will be 40% in the 12{+t}{+h} standard.

A circular in this regard will be issued within the next two days, claim the AICTE sources. "The admission process has started both in engineering and pharmacy colleges. Meanwhile, there is another round of admission scheduled for students who have scored 45% and above. Around 5,000 more students will have a chance to apply for the engineering and pharmacy courses after this circular," said a senior member of the Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (JACPC).

There are a total of five engineering colleges that are hoping for permissions this year, said sources in the state education department. If the AICTE permits these colleges, a total of 1,500 new engineering seats will be added this year.

Apart from the five colleges, the AICTE is also considering applications of 11 new engineering colleges in the state this year. If these colleges get approval, an additional 700 seats will be added this year. "The proposals for 11 colleges are under consideration at this stage," said the JACPCmember.
