Karnataka high court issues notices on MBBS student’s suicide

The Karnataka high court has sent notices to the Union of India, Department of Medical Education, city commissioner of police and MS Ramaiah Medical College on a petition requesting a CBI probe into the suicide of an MBBS student.
Durgesh Kanwar Shekhawat, 20, a native of Madhya Pradesh and a second year MBBS student of MS Ramaiah Medical College, was found hanging in her hostel room on March 22 last year.
Her father Hanuman Singh Shekhawat moved the court, requesting it to order the CBI or any other competent investigation agency to probe the incident. He alleged that college authorities had harassed his daughter.
Hanuman Singh submitted that Durgesh was a bright student, and had been academically well ranked. She committed suicide after the college expelled her for cheating in an examination.
The college principal and dean Dr S Kumar had then said that Durgesh was found to have indulged in “academic misconduct and malpractice during the internal examination of the college.”
The incident reported by the head of the department concerned was referred to the disciplinary committee of the college who found the student guilty of the charges and also the student had confessed to the charges in writing, he had said in March.
The police had then registered an unnatural death report case under Section 174 of Indian Penal Code as no death note was found in her hostel room.
Durgesh’s suicide had sparked a protest in the college, with the ABVP, the students’ wing of the BJP, spearheading the campaign.
The protestors alleged that the student was expelled without a proper enquiry.
