Rally to Tagore abode to mark 150 years

The 12th edition of a car rally, which will commemorate Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary, will be held on June 18.
The Telegraph 12th Kaviguru Rally 2011, presented by Techno India Group and organised by the Bengal Motor Sports Club, will be flagged off at the Central Avenue gate of the Jorasanko Thakurbari at 7.30am by sports minister Madan Mitra, higher education minister Bratya Basu and actress Debasree Roy. It will end at Uttarayan, Tagore’s home in Santiniketan.
Thirty four-wheelers and 15 two-wheelers will cover the 260 km in around eight hours, travelling at an average speed of 45 kmph, the secretary-general of the motor sports club, Jay P. Majumdar, said.
“We are privileged to be part of this prestigious motor sport event held on the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore,” said Satyen Raychaudhuri, the managing director of Techno India Group.
Rally steward Pratim Chowdhury said the vehicles would travel through national and state highways and dirt tracks through Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan and Birbhum districts. About 16 per cent of the route will comprise dirt tracks, where the competitive section will be held.In Burdwan, the participants will stop at Renaissance, a township built by the Shrachi Group, for rest and refuelling. “It’s a pleasure to be associated with Kaviguru Car Rally,” said Rahul Todi, the managing director of Shrachi, a rally sponsor.
The Kaviguru Rally enjoys the status of a national competition, granted by the Federation of Motor Sports of India.
The 12th edition of the rally has seen a marginal increase in the number of participants, from 30 last year to 45.
A prize money of Rs 1 lakh and trophies will be given away to the winners at a programme in Santiniketan on June 19. Trauma care, recovery and breakdown vehicles will accompany the rally, said steward Chowdhury.
