KIT: Private universities in India

The higher education system in India is largest in the world in terms of number of institutes and the third-largest in terms of enrollments.
The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education in India is 12 per cent compared to the global average of 23 per cent. The government has set a target of achieving 30 per cent GER by 2020.
The private higher education market in India is currently estimated at $10 billion and growing at 11 per cent a year.
Currently, there are 82 private universities in the country. These have been set up as non-profit entities and under a specially enacted state law.
New world class private universities are being set up with an aim to create a new generation of knowledge professionals and with a focus on innovative, multi-disciplinary curriculum. There is an opportunity for new players to set up institutions which address the current challenges and also meet student aspirations for world class education.
